What is Labor Day?
According to history.com Labor Day was created by the labor movement in the late 19th century and became a federal holiday in 1894. Back in the 1800’s the average American worked 12-hour days and seven-day weeks just to make a basic living. Children as young as 5 and 6 years old worked in some of the most dangerous places with poor working conditions such as mines, mills, and factories. It was ultimately mass protests as well as a strike by railroad employees in May of 1894 that led to congress passing an act making Labor Day a legal holiday a month later. President Grover Cleveland supported the act and signed it into law on June 28, 1894. There is of course a bit of irony to celebrating work by taking off work, but who are we to argue?
The End of Summer
While Memorial Day signifies the “official” beginning of summer Labor Day is usually associated with the end of summer. School is back in session in most areas, vacation trips are history, and it’s time to settle in for fall.

Labor Day for many folks also signals the last party opportunity to have a cookout celebration with family and friends. At Halteman Meats we don’t agree with that sentiment! We use all natural pork casings to contain those juices inside your sausage rather than losing them to flareups on the grill of your choice.
Turkey and chicken sausage starts with fresh, boneless thighs, some of the leanest meat you can find on the market today. Looked upon as a heart healthy alternative, you won’t sacrifice genuinely GOOD flavor if you choose this option. We use only the best collagen casing for this sausage, so you know when you eat turkey you're ONLY eating turkey!
