July 4th; Independence Day, America’s Birthday. No matter how you title it, The Fourth is one of America’s favorite holidays and especially a favorite of children! What child doesn’t like the boom of fireworks or even the opportunity to set off their very own firecrackers. Here are a few facts about July 4th.
Fireworks Facts
In 2020 there were approximately 50 million pounds of professional fireworks and 102 million pounds of consumer/backyard fireworks set off. https://nypost.com
According to Parade Magazine, this amounts to about 16,000 firework displays around the country. https://parade.com
In 2019 it’s estimated that Americans spent $1 Billion on fireworks for the fourth. https://www.opploans.com
When is Independence Day?
Did you know President John Adams believed American Independence should be celebrated July 2? His reason was the actual day Congress voted for independence was July 2, not July 4. Adams was so annoyed by this that he turned down invitations to July 4th celebrations throughout his lifetime. Ironically, Adams died on July 4th, 1826. Two other US presidents, Thomas Jefferson and James Monroe, also passed away on July 4th, Thomas the same year as Adams, and Monroe in 1831.
One US president was born on July 4th; Calvin Coolidge.
Although the Declaration of Independence was formally adopted by Congress on the Fourth, most of the signatories didn’t sign until August.
Foodies and July 4th
Food, of course, is one of the highlights of July 4th. This article in Successful Farming says 65% of Americans celebrate the Fourth by hosting a cookout, barbeque, or picnic. $7.1 Billion will be spent on food items! It estimates we eat 150 million hot dogs every July 4th. (Sorry, we don’t sell tube steaks )
Turtle Soup?
You’ve heard the saying, “As American as apple pie”. What about as American as…turtle soup??? According to legend the John Adams family kicked off the first Independence Day with a meal of turtle soup, poached salmon with egg sauce, green peas, boiled potatoes, and for dessert, Indian Pudding. (No, we don’t have a recipe for that one!).
